Syimon Kibe

Syimon first noticed that he had a talent in art when he was in second grade and his teacher asked him to help with lessons by creating drawings on the chalkboard. When he was in his second year of high school, he joined Uweza Art Gallery and learned how to paint. Syimon is 24 years old and lives in Kibera.

His favorite themes and subjects include abstract animals and nature. He hopes, through his art, to inspire both residents of Kibera and Kenya as well as people around the world to view art as not only a talent but a career and a means to help one meet their needs.

His biggest challenge so far as an artist has been a lack of resources and opportunities to market his work. Together with two other artists from the gallery, Syimon has started his own printing and design company. They create printed and painted products such as t-shirts, shoes, and water bottles.

Uweza has helped him pursue his goals by providing art materials that he wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. Having completed high school in 2017, he now lives on his own and the sales of his artwork help him meet is basic needs. In the future, Syimon dreams of owning his own gallery and art school.
