Scott Eric Williams

Scott Eric Williams is an award-winning artist (Andrew Mellon Fellowship 2019, JP Morgan Abadali project 2022) and youth educator from Cape Town, South Africa. Williams uses diverse media, ranging from woven soft-sculpture and wheatpaste, to photography, zines, and performance art. Through his use of site-specific materials, Williams’ work contemplates the archive and intangible heritage by using urban visual languages to plot cartographies of rogue urbanisms.


Currently, Williams is a Master’s candidate at the University of Stellenbosch, researching socially engaged forms of youth arts education within the informal sector.


As a solo artist, he has exhibited at Eclectica Contemporary, Gallery MOMO, Geumgang Nature Art Biennale and UCT Michaelis – amongst others. As a founding member of the collective Burning Museum (2012-2015), Williams’ work is strongly characterized by themes of archive, remembrance, and marginalized histories. Burning Museum have exhibited at The Centre for African Studies – UCT, Brundyn+, Kunsthaus Dresden and on the streets of Cape Town. His other work includes Youth Facilitation at The District Six Museum, and writing for various print and online platforms.
